Solo Hiking Safety Tips

Many people wonder whether hiking solo is safe. While research suggests that it is indeed safe under most circumstances, I strongly recommend basing this decision on your fitness & confidence levels as well as your wilderness knowledge.

Most “experts” will sway beginner hikers not to hike solo, however, depending on your schedule and social circle, some beginners may only be ablet to begin as a solo hiker.

In fact, that’s how I started and continued to solo hike for 2 years, gradually increasing miles and elevation as my confidence and strength continued to escalate.

Beginner Solo Hiking Tips:

Preparation over panic!

*Carry an SOS device.

*Share your route!

Share your route with someone close to you. Be as detailed as possible, including start time and potential ETA back to vehicle! Write the trailhead, start time, anticipated time you will be back and your exact route on paper and leave face down in your car in case SARS needs to come and find you!

DO NOT post your solo hike details on social media!

*Ensure personal safety by packing safety devices:

-Knife

-Pepper Spray (hand glove is more efficient)

-Bear Spray

**You have the right to “carry”. Please abide by state laws and be responsible. Take classes and get certified so you are legally protected.

*Always be aware of your surroundings!

*Stay on trail.

*Use topo maps & Apps like Alltrails/Gaia for navigation.

There are other apps out there that I am less familiar with. Do your research!

*Look back behind you every so often to support proper orientation.

*Pack plenty of snacks and adequate water (dependent on miles/elevation)

*Pack basic survival items:

-Space Blanket

-Life Straw

-Head Lamp

-Firestarter

-Bivy

-Paracord

*Pack extra clothing/layers to reflect drastic temperature shifts and weather patterns (what you will depend on the season).

*Be mindful of wildlife.

TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS & INTUITION! If something or someone feels off TRUST that.

If you get lost, although counter intuitive, do not scream and yell. Preserve your energy and do your best to stay calm. You will have a better chance of re-orienting yourself with a clear & calm mind. I KNOW THIS IS HARD. Breathe deep and stay put until you get your bearings. Stay tuned for a BLOG on this very topic!

Have FUN! Some of my best hikes have been the ones while I was out there all on my own. There is a freedom and solitude that comes with solo hiking that cannot be described adequately in words. You just have to exeperience it!
